HPFAANJ will monitor state and local housing policy proposals to ensure housing providers have a voice in conversations focused on building new housing, the rising costs of insurance and utilities, property taxes, school funding, and environmental impact policies.
- Issue – New Housing Construction: There is a need for hundreds of thousands of new homes in New Jersey. We applaud the governor and legislature for prioritizing new affordable housing construction. New Jersey needs hundreds of thousands of new homes for all income levels to ensure that the state remains competitive.
- Issue – Rising Costs: We are in crisis. Housing providers in all types of housing can agree on one thing – the cost to own and maintain our homes is rising dramatically! Insurance premiums are rising by as much as 100% year over year. Utility rates have been rising for months and the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities approved a coming rate hike of 20%! While we understand that the state is part of a regional energy supply conglomerate, we hope our leaders in Trenton buy the best sources of power and invest in new power generation in this state. More energy supply will meet demand and make prices competitive for everyone.
- Issue – Taxes and School Funding: Like prices at the grocery store and the cost to power our homes we know taxes will keep rising. Worse yet, our quality of life in many of our communities is stagnant or declining. Taxes go up and our parks aren’t well maintained, our infrastructure gets worse, and our schools don’t receive new investments.
- Issue – Environmental Impact: We support sustainability and any investments in our local parks, the Jersey shore, and spots in between. We also understand the risks of climate change and how it will impact our lives no matter where we live. However, our state and local leaders need to keep the burden of environmental remediation and climate change mitigation off our backs. The state should use its bonding authority and/or federal funding to fortify our communities.
